Born in Ikeda City, Osaka Prefecture in 1938. After working as an assistant to Takeji Iwamiya and Eikoh Hosoe, he began working as a freelance photographer in 1964. In 1967, he won the Japan Photo Critics Association Newcomer Award for series such as "Nippon Theater" published in "Camera Mainichi".
In recent years, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1999, Touring Metropolitan Museum of Art, Japan Society (New York)), National Museum of Art, Osaka (2011), joint exhibition with William Klein held at Tate Modern (London) (2012-) 2013), and other large-scale exhibitions have been held in Japan and overseas, receiving the International Center of Photography (New York) Infinity Award (2012), the Order of Arts and Letters from the French government (2018), Hasselblad International Photography Award (2019) 2009) and has received high acclaim worldwide.
